    Retention

[Home] >[Orthodontics] >[Retention]

When we remove your braces or you have completed all stages of Invisalign we will give you a retainer. In the beginning most patients have to wear their retainer 24 hour a day. After about 6 months many patients are allowed to wear their retainers at night only. Retention is forever which means you will always have to wear your retainer a couple of nights a week. There are different options for retainers:

Hawley Retainers: The most common type of a retainer is a Hawley retainer. It is made of metal wires that surround the teeth and keep them in place. The metal wires are anchored into an acrylic plate that sits in the palate or floor of your mouth. The benefit of Hawley retainers is that the metal wires can be adjusted.

Essix Retainers: An Essix retainer is a clear retainer made out of plastic and it surround all of the patient's teeth, similar to an Invisalign aligner. These retainers are made in our office and are not suitable for all patients. Ask Dr. Homayoun or Dr. Neza if you are a candidate for an Essix retainer.

Vivara Retainers: Vivara retainers are made by the same company that manufactures Invisalign. It is a thermoplastic retainer that is 30% stronger than any other retainer. Patients who went through braces and Invisalign treatment are all candidates for Vivara retainers.
